One Fabulous Singer Is Teaching In A CT Classroom

Latanya Farrell and The Bookman Styles Band are just pure delight to listen to and to watch them interact with each other.

I was introduced to them at a gala in Farmington, Connecticut to benefit Chrysalis. Farrell is pint-sized fabulousness and she is a sweet as she is talented. Given a bigger stage, this gal could really work a crowd. She has so much energy and stage presence it’s no wonder that in 2003 she won the Connecticut Star Search competition.

Farrell who lives in West Hartford, co-wrote and performed the title track for the motion picture She’s Got It, which won the 2008 TOMI Film Festival award for Best Feature Film. She has opened for Air Supply, and her debut CD, titled Feelin’ Alright, was released in the fall of 2008.

Farrell, a native of Bethel, Connecticut, is a mother of two and a sixth grade language arts teacher and computer whiz at Chippens Hill Middle School in Bristol, Connecticut. When she first got into teaching she taught kindergarten. Her husband, Jason, manages her and he is doing a wonderful job at that. Married for 15 years and the proud parents of two children, aged 7 and 9, these two still look at each other like they married yesterday. They are both graduates of Western Connecticut State University. Talk about a smart cookie, Farrell has two Master’s degrees from the University of Hartford.

She only started singing professionally about three years ago, and man is she taking off, this girl has her wings. Spend some time on her web site and you’ll see where she’s being booked.

I was trying to figure out how to tell someone who she sounds like. I think her friend on the dance floor summed it up best when she said, she sounds like all the greats, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Anita Baker, Sade, Broadway voices all rolled up into one. Latanya has a ball when she’s on stage and I’m trying to figure out how to introduce her to Broadway, she’s that good. She looks a bit like Tony and Emmy award winning actress and singer, Leslie Uggums.

The Bookman Styles Band has a lot of fun with this gal. The band members come from Connecticut and Massachusetts to back her up. They’re playing everywhere these days and that includes the Atrium at Foxwoods Casino. I could listen to this singer-songwriter all day, watching her have fun with her band and her audience is what sets her apart.

The Bookman Styles Band includes Dave Smith, Bass Guitar/Vocals; Scott Wattel, Keyboards; Keith Gibson, Lead Guitar; Jason Arnold, Drums; David Davis, Saxophone; and Billy Rosa, Percussion.

Oh how I envy those 6th graders in her class, she must be a delight for her students. Follow her and go see her perform. Connecticut has so much talent, what took me so long to find her? You have a new groupie, Latanya!

P.S. One cute quip from Latanya, she tells everyone her name rhymes with “lasagna.”

Bill, I hope so, with a voice like that her students would be lucky to have her sing to them!
