Reinvention Leads to Farm Fresh Deliveries

Deb Marsden of East Haddam, Connecticut is delivering farm fresh produce to people’ s front doors every week, year ’round. Her business is called Connecticut Farm Fresh Express.

About three years ago, she got an idea, after remembering stories from her Grandmother about the Great Depression, and decided to go back to that era, of farm markets. She’s taken it one step further by delivering the farm market to people’s homes. There has been a huge learning curve, the work is harder than she thought, but she loves it. She started with just 4 farms and 8 customers, now there are at least 100 farms involved. Currently the farms she caters to are typically 20 acres and under.

The orders go out with drivers all around the state and the food is delivered in coolers. Deb also drives and has already put 93,000 miles on her little truck.

Deb started with four farms and is now up to about one hundred in the state. I wondered what could possibly be delivered during the winter months in the Northeast, well I got quite an education on that. All kinds of things are delivered. Stored vegetables in a cool environment can still be delivered long into the winter months. Then of course there is the butter and cheese, bread, pizza dough and hydroponic lettuce, and flowers, all grown in greenhouses. There is Connecticut made sausage and mixes for Johnnycakes, and well the list is endless which you will see when you go on her ordering web site.

Keeping close eye from the office are Deb’s adorable Border Collies. Mojo and Piper are brother and sister. Deb says most of the fresh produce that we get at a typical grocery store comes from Florida or California during the winter months, that’s up to 2,000 miles away. For just a little more, you can get grown right in Connecticut food which hasn’t been trucked in and is helping the local farmer and the state economy. Take a look at some of the farms that are listed on her company web site. When you get down to it, Connecticut is an amazing state and folks like Deb are helping us to discover what is out there that you can and have brought right to your house.

Deb mentions in the video that she was looking to reinvent herself, and this Grandmother of six is in overdrive doing that, she deserved a huge pat on the back for putting this together.
