Richard Willard’s Love Affair With The Automobile

It’s hard to put down the camera when you’re around Richard Willard’s auto shop in Westbrook, Connecticut.  Every where you look, there’s a vintage car or a vintage sign, the kind of place you might see in a motion picture.

Willard has had a life long love affair with the automobile and he turned his passion into a business, wouldn’t we all like to do that? He calls the place Vintage Motorcars, because that is all that is restored here, just vintage vehicles, don’t bother bringing down a Honda or any other kind of new fangled road machinery.

Willard can go all the way back to 1901 and fix ‘er up for ya, to make it a real classic again.

Willard says he gets automobiles (he prefers that term to cars) from all over the world. No matter what needs to be fixed or restored he and the crew do it. He can have that chrome on a vintage Buick back to a spit-polished shine in no time.

Need the leather seats on the Desoto refurbished? No problem, the group does that too.

There was an old Woodie station wagon in the shop on the day I visited and I know he’ll have the woodwork on that wagon looking new again and ready for its closeup.

The high hanging vintage signs that Willard has collected from various places gives his shop that classic car look. I told him the shop and his show room, such a novelty would be a great place to host a cocktail party for a fundraiser, among all those cars are you kidding that’s a no brainer.

It’s great to see a business owner just having plain fun in the work he does day in and day out. Way to go Rich, you’ve figured out a great way to head down the highway on your terms.
