Camomile Hixon’s Glitter Unicorn
The world is a better place because of the arts…musicians, painters, artists and artisans. The arts struggle to get the spotlight. Camomile Hixon is a passionate, international pop artist who grew up in Milford. Hixon has carved out a niche with glitter art, but what has come as a surprise to her is that she is bringing happiness and whimsy through a unicorn. The idea came to her as she sat near businessmen who were miserable as they headed to Wall Street on a New York City subway. “I had an idea to put up a missing unicorn poster and I designed this thing and it said with a beautiful picture of a unicorn, it was a poster, a large poster, large female with a friendly disposition, last seen entering Central Park at West 72nd. If seen, please call and leave a message. I liked my poster so much, I hired my friends. They put posters all over Manhattan,” said Hixon.
“Mayor Bloomberg, he’s pretty uptight about art like that and a poster doesn’t last very long like it used to in Manhattan. I can assure you, but they lasted long enough for people to Twitter it, to send these posters in 2010 all around the world. And so after the first night, I had over a thousand phone calls to the unicorn hotline. And, this was so odd to me. I took out a Skype phone number, I was thinking maybe ten people would call and I was thinking if I could get those businessmen to just, all I wanted initially is to just get three businessmen to think about unicorns for two seconds. I thought that would help. That’s how small the kernel of my idea was and then all of a sudden I had within two weeks, I had ten thousand phone calls,” said Hixon.
