The Sinatra Years

B1053_SinatraMe_DThe late Tony Consiglio of Sally’s Pizza fame in New Haven knew almost everything there was to know about Frank Sinatra. (Tony Consiglio passed in 2008)

Consiglio was at Sinatra’s side for the whole ride. From high school drop out days to becoming one of the world’s biggest stars.

Consiglio told most of his stories to Franz Douskey who put them all in a book.

Douskey told one of his stories which includes Consiglio helping out Sinatra with a little spray paint.New_Haven_author_writes_book_about_Sinat_1726220000_3990988_ver1.0_640_480

“So it’s at this point in 1951 and Frank is really self conscious about bowing to the audience because he shows his bald spot and he’s ready to quit. He’s having a talk with Bing Crosby, Bing Crosby has just come back from Bermuda and is at the Fountainbleu visiting Frank. And Frank said ‘gee Bing you know I’ve got this problem and I’m just embarrassed by it. Well Bing said,  I wear a toupee. Jack Benny wears a toupee. Bob Hope wears a toupee. George Burns wears a toupee. Just get a toupee. And Frank says, ‘I’m too young. I just don’t want to do that.  And it was Joey Bishop who came up with the idea, not the idea, but the information that there’s a spray. You can spray on your head and therefore you can cover up the bald spot. Doesn’t look like you have a bald spot, so when he bowed, he wouldn’t seem shiny,” said Douskey.

Douskey’s book is called “Sinatra and Me: The Very Good Years.” You’ll find all kinds of photos and letters and stories you haven’t heard before. All from a New Haven guy who saw it all.
