The Holidays Are Coming To Gillette Castle!

The holiday hours are set for you and your family to come enjoy the amazing Gillette Castle in East Haddam. Have you been to the twenty-four room mansion before around the holidays? The medieval looking castle is all decked out. Built by one of the most famous actors, directors and playwrights of his time, William Hooker Gillette built this fabulous “retirement” home for about one million dollars. He was a silent movie actor back in the day and played Sherlock Holmes on the stage. The castle sits high atop a hill on 184 acres overlooking the Connecticut River. designed the castle and most of its contents personally. It is made of local fieldstone supported by a steel framework. It took twenty men five years (1914-1919), to complete the main structure. The place was purchased by the State of Connecticut in 1943 from the executors of Mr. Gillette’s will.

The woodwork in the place is hand-hewn southern white oak. There are forty-seven doors within the structure, none are alike. There are built-in couches, a movable table on tracks, and light switches of carved wood, all things for you to study when you venture inside.

Hours of operation are just weekends after Thanksgiving thru December 21st from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon, the last ticket of each day will be sold at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $6.00 per adult 13 & up, $2.00 ages 6-12 and there is no charge for under the age of 6.
