A Woodstock Legend Is Playing The Danbury Palace

unnamedWoodstock Legend Melanie to Play Palace Danbury on July 16

If you were at the Woodstock Music Festival 46 years ago, okay, you have bragging rights. It was three amazing days of peace and music. If you missed it – or want to relive it – “An Evening with Melanie” is your ticket to celebrate the summer of love in Danbury, when Woodstock legend Melanie performs at The Danbury Palace on Thursday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m.

An Evening with Melanie is an unforgettable night of songs and stories from the incredible career of the artist who became known as “The Female Bob Dylan”.  Accompanied by her son Beau-Jarred, a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist in his own right, the show is a musical journey from that momentous summer night of 1969 to the present.

This was Melanie at Woodstock in 1969.

The flower child was one of three women to perform solo at Woodstock (in stellar company with Joan Baez and Janis Joplin). She inspired the first panorama of candles and cigarette lighters ever raised at a concert event. It was 11pm, dark, and raining. Candles were passed through the crowd. As they were lit, the lyrics for Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) formed in her mind. The song sold more than one million copies in 1970 and prompted Billboard to anoint her as female vocalist of the year.

Melanie was the first solo pop/rock artist ever to appear at Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House. The top television hosts of all time — Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and Dick Cavett — battled to book her. After her stunning performance on his show, Sullivan said that he had not seen such a “dedicated and responsive audience since Elvis Presley.”

In the years that followed Melanie continued to tour and record, selling more than 80 million albums to date. She’s had her songs covered by singers as diverse as Cher, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles and Macy Gray. She also became the spokesperson for UNICEF, won an Emmy, opened a restaurant, wrote a musical, and raised a family.

These days Melanie is poised to enlighten a new generation about what it means to sing with passion and eloquence, to write with emotion and intelligence, and to inspire through song. She has teamed up with Miley Cyrus to record a pair of classic Melanie songs in support of The Happy Hippie Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Cyrus which seeks to “fight the injustices faced by homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.”

Sharing the stage with Melanie at The Palace will be EVA, an international female folk group with roots in the USA, Ireland, & Australia. EVA features Kath Buckell, Nicole Zuraitis and Liz Simmons performing traditional and contemporary music with stunning three-part harmonies.

An Evening With Melanie will take place at The Palace Danbury on Thursday, July 16 starting at 7:30 pm. Tickets cost $40/35 ($40 VIP includes Meet and Greet Reception) and may be purchased online at www.thepalacedanbury.com, by phone at 203 794-9944, or at the box office starting one hour before showtime.
