The One And Only Cher Receives The Spirit Of Katharine Hepburn Award

I didn’t see this coming. In a global COVID-19 pandemic, Cher becomes the 5th annual recipient of The Spirit of Katharine Hepburn award given annually by The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, Connecticut of which I am Vice President. The theater was desperate to bring Cher to Connecticut, but that was not possible, so we went to her to take her the gorgeous bronze statue of Katharine Hepburn. It was kind of a covert mission. There were three of us onboard a private jet with two pilots. We did a COVID test before leaving as required. On Cher’s end all of her people who would be at her home in Malibu, California got tested too. We left on August 30th, flew into Los Angeles from Mystic, Connecticut, and spent the night across from Los Angeles International Airport. We got up bright and early and drove to Cher’s mansion on the sea spending four hours with her, then it was wheels up and back to Connecticut. Cher was gracious and funny and kind and thrilled to receive her award which is now sitting right next to her Oscar. I’ll remember this forever, right up there with a very lengthy interview with the most trusted man in America, Walter Cronkite.
